How an Exploding Meteor Turned a Great Shot Into a Once-in-a-Lifetime Photograph

http://petapixel.com/2013/11/19/exploding-meteor-turned-great-shot-lifetime-photograph/
I’ve been shooting photos for 20 years. I’ve made my living in the profession for the last 15. I can count on one hand the number of times that everything lined up perfectly and a truly rare image was created.

Now, I don’t want to toot my own horn about this shot, but the fact that, during a 30 second exposure, after a 10 second timer (during which I hopped down from the roof of my truck where the camera was on a tripod, and joined the scene by the fire), a meteor (or so they tell us) would enter the sky EXACTLY in the corner of the frame and explode in the very part of the frame that needed balance, just as I had finally worked out the correct exposure and lighting to match the foreground with the night sky, is beyond rare. It’s a non-chance. There is no way to plan for something like this. No way to even hope for it. Source: How an Exploding Meteor Turned a Great Shot Into a Once-in-a-Lifetime PPublish Posthotograph

News agencies secure 50,000 Euro payout over image theft in bid to tame 'Wild West' of online copyright theft | Press Gazette

A group of news agencies has settled out-of-court with a Croatian website for more than 50,000 Euros after it lifted their pictures and re-used them online without credit.

The ten independent agencies, all members of the National Association of Press Agencies (NAPA), sued www.tportal.hr after finding photographs had been lifted directly, mostly from Mail Online, with no attempt having been made to obtain a licence or pay for usage.

The usage was spotted by a NAPA member news agency which invoiced and sent numerous reminders for the usage but was constantly ignored. Source: News agencies secure 50,000 Euro payout over image theft in bid to tame 'Wild West' of online copyright theft | Press Gazette

Óscar Monzón's KARMA has won the First PhotoBook Award in this year's PhotoBook Awards organised by Paris Photo and Aperture. The announcement was made at Paris Photo earlier today.

The Rebecca Senf Mixtape

I met Rebecca Senf at a review event a couple of years ago and was impressed by her dedication to photography and to her commitment to her community. She is a thoughtful curator, one that shifts her focus from the historic to the contemporary, from the Arizona region to global communities, and from the grand scope of landscape and aerial photography to work that is more intimate and personal. It’s that breath of curiosity and focus that makes her unique. Not only does she straddle different photographic realms, but she straddles two amazing job positions, working for both the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona and the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix as the Norton Family Curator. She truly is a rich voice in the photographic community and it is with great pleasure that I present, The Rebecca Senf Mixtape. Source: The Rebecca Senf Mixtape | LENSCRATCH

Photographer Documents Her Own Pregnancy in Striking Selfies

Buenos Aires-based photographer Sophie Starzenski shows just how much women's bodies change during pregnancy with this stunning series called 40 Weeks and a Mirror. She's combined two growing trends, "the selfie" (a a self-portrait taken with a camera or phone) and pregnancy progression portraits, to create a fantastic set of photos that are both artistic and vulnerable. Wearing just underwear, she drapes one arm over her bare breasts while the other is wrapped over her head, holding the camera. In all of the shots, we don't get to see the photographer's face, though at the end of the series, she's holding her adorable 2-month-old son Simon who had been steadily growing in her belly. Photographer James Neiss' works on display at conference center

Niagara Gazette photographer James Neiss may have a photojournalism career spanning some 26 years, but he’s always kept in touch with his more artistic roots.

So while he may spend his days criss-crossing Niagara County snapping photographs of car accidents, house fires and town meetings, there are other sights that stop this veteran news photographer in his tracks, like a kitty climbing a window or a particularly captivating rainbow. Young photographer captures Alaska's diversity in new book

If precocity had a face, it might be Brian Adams. At age 28, the Alaskan photographer has had work selected for "Rarefied Light" -- the big state juried photo show -- three times. His pictures have been featured in notable national galleries, in the New York Times, the Guardian of London and on the cover of Time magazine.

Now the University of Alaska Press has published a glossy collection of nearly 200 portraits and other images taken by him, "I Am Alaskan" (Snowy Owl Books, $50). Source: Young photographer captures Alaska's diversity in new book | Arts and Culture | ADN.com

Hoarders' homes captured by photographer as part of recovery effort

A photographer with a strong stomach has dared go where others dare not in an attempt to help hoarders cure their condition.

Paula Salischiker, from London, was invited into the homes of hoarders in London and Essex, while working with a group who meet regularly in a bid to try and remedy their condition.

Paula said: "Some of the people I photographed were deeply ashamed of their condition and the state of their homes and even had respectable jobs and good social lives. Source: PICS: Hoarders' homes captured by photographer as part of recovery effort  - NY Daily News:

Long Live Film | Film is Not Dead

Indie Film Lab is a lab dedicated to photographers who still shoot film. Earlier this year they decided to take a road trip from Montgomery Alabama to Las Vegas Nevada, and they made a documentary about their trip.

“Long Live Film” is a documentary of Indie Film Lab’s road trip, and during this trip they talk about why they shoot film. They have photographers who shoot weddings, lifestyle, and commercial photography talking about the cameras and films they love to use. It’s inspiring hearing how much they care about their photography, and how excited they get talking about film. Source: Long Live Film | Film is Not Dead

Langston's most famous photograph, taken on May 14, 1961, showed a mob of Klansmen who were waiting to confront the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists traveling the South to test new laws prohibiting segregation. As Langston arrived at the Trailways Bus Station in Birmingham, Klansmen were beating up Freedom Rider James Peck. Langston had time to take one picture before the mob turned on him.
